In a related development, Governor Monday Okpebholo has ordered an aggressive clampdown on cult-related violence following a wave of attacks in the state. Between Friday and Sunday, at least five individuals were reportedly killed in clashes between rival cult groups.
According to a statement by the governor’s media aide, Bugie Okhuemoi, the resurgence of cult violence has prompted the government to act decisively. The statement emphasized that previous peace accords with suspected group leaders have been violated, and those responsible will be prosecuted under the state’s Anti-Cultism and Kidnapping Law.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating cultism and restoring peace in Edo. “There will be no sacred cows. Security forces are fully mobilized, and residents are advised to remain calm as the government works to ensure safety and stability,” the statement concluded.
