PDP Braces for Exodus: Governors, NWC to Strategize May 11 Amid Tinubu’s Rising Influence

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to hold a critical meeting on May 11 involving its National Working Committee (NWC) and Governors Forum, as it moves to address an escalating wave of defections, internal disputes, and the legal implications following the recent exit of top Delta State leaders.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A high-ranking NWC official, speaking under anonymity, revealed that the meeting will focus on preventive strategies to stem further defections, including the controversial case of the National Secretary and the recent defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The official described their defection as driven by personal ambition rather than legitimate party grievances.

In response to these developments, the NWC has directed its Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), to initiate legal proceedings over what it sees as a breach of party mandates, especially regarding elected officials who switched parties.

The party leadership has emphasized unity and pledged to reclaim its lost mandates through the courts. Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, after the party’s 600th NWC meeting, reassured supporters of PDP’s resilience and internal cohesion, warning defectors not to use internal disagreements as a pretext for betrayal.

Damagum confirmed the NWC’s endorsement of the PDP Governors Forum’s recommendations, including the nomination of Deputy National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo and a proposal for an early National Elective Convention in August—pending National Executive Committee (NEC) approval on May 27.

To address the turmoil in Delta, a Caretaker Committee led by Chief Emmanuel Ogidi has been instituted to reorganize the party structure in the state.

When asked whether action would be taken against members showing support for President Tinubu, Damagum confirmed affirmatively.

Meanwhile, Okowa, in a televised interview, explained the rationale behind his defection, citing the need to reconnect Delta State with federal power in the interest of development. He admitted misalignment with regional sentiment in 2023 and expressed belief that Tinubu should be allowed to complete his tenure for national stability.

He asserted that widespread consultations preceded the mass movement to the APC and suggested that PDP lacks the readiness to contest power in 2027.

However, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, through his spokesperson Paul Ibe, denied reports of his exit from the PDP, maintaining his commitment to the party while respecting the freedom of association for others.

As PDP navigates this turbulent phase, the outcome of its May 11 strategy meeting may determine whether it can stabilize or face continued erosion of influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
