Sanwo-Olu Slams Peter Obi: “You Contributed to Nigeria’s Poverty”

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has delivered a strong rebuke to Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, accusing him of lacking the moral authority to criticize Nigeria’s poverty levels. In a statement titled “Factually Addressing Mr. Peter Obi’s Criticism of Nigeria at Johns Hopkins University,” Sanwo-Olu claimed that Obi’s remarks were not only disparaging but also hypocritical, as he had played a role in worsening poverty in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Obi had recently spoken at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he compared Nigeria’s poverty trajectory with that of countries like China and Vietnam. He highlighted that while Nigeria had the least number of people living in poverty in 1990 compared to these countries, it failed to achieve similar progress in the following decades. Obi emphasized the importance of political leadership in fostering growth, with a focus on education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

In his response, Sanwo-Olu expressed disappointment at Obi’s comments, stating that prominent Nigerians should aim to project a positive image of the country abroad rather than speak negatively about it. He argued that true patriotism involves promoting Nigeria on the global stage, a responsibility everyone shares.

Sanwo-Olu also defended President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in addressing poverty, noting that as governor and now president, Tinubu has made significant strides in poverty alleviation. He highlighted Tinubu’s investments in education, the provision of loans to students, and support for small businesses, which includes over half a billion dollars in credit facilities for small and medium-scale enterprises in less than two years.

Turning his attention to Obi’s tenure as Anambra’s governor, Sanwo-Olu pointed out that poverty levels in the state increased during Obi’s administration. He noted that the poverty rate in Anambra rose from 41.4% before Obi assumed office to 53.7% midway through his tenure. In contrast, Obi’s successor, Willie Obiano, succeeded in reducing the poverty rate to 14.8%.

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.
