INEC Chairman Urges Quick Passage of Electoral Act Amendments
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has appealed to the National Assembly to expedite the ongoing review of Nigeria’s electoral legal framework to ensure smooth preparations ahead of future elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Yakubu made the call during the opening of a two-day retreat with the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters, held on Monday at the Marriott Hotel in Lagos.
Reflecting on previous reforms, Yakubu recalled a similar retreat held in March 2020, which led to the repeal and re-enactment of the Electoral Act 2010, culminating in the Electoral Act 2022. He emphasized that focused engagements like retreats are crucial for deepening electoral reforms, compared to broader public hearings.
He commended the collaboration between lawmakers, who have real political field experience, and INEC, describing it as a positive development for the country’s democratic process.
Highlighting a key reform success, Yakubu pointed to the amendment extending the timeline between party primaries and general elections to 180 days, up from the previous 60 days. According to him, this change significantly improved INEC’s logistics and prevented election postponements during the 2023 general elections.
Yakubu revealed that INEC had originally proposed a one-year gap but accepted the 180-day compromise. He further celebrated another achievement: for the first time since 1999, all ballot papers and result sheets for the 2023 elections were printed locally in Nigeria, earning INEC praise from the Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria (CIPPON).
Looking ahead, Yakubu emphasized that the retreat provides an opportunity for INEC to share field experiences and suggest critical reforms for better election management. He urged lawmakers to fast-track amendments to the Electoral Act to allow enough time for effective implementation before the next election cycle.
