The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday by its General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

According to Bakare-Oki, the accident occurred at Alausa Bus Stop near the ‘Radio’ area along Kudirat Abiola Way, Ikeja, involving a heavily loaded truck with the registration number BDG 610 YA.

He explained that preliminary investigations indicated the cyclist was attempting to maneuver from Kudirat Abiola Way to Obafemi Awolowo Way when he collided with the truck.

The impact caused the cyclist to lose control, leading to a fatal head injury when he struck the pavement, dying instantly.

Eyewitnesses reported that the cyclist was distracted, using a phone earpiece, which may have led to a lapse in concentration while navigating the busy expressway.

LASTMA operatives arrived quickly at the scene to secure the area and ensure the safety of other road users, while traffic was managed smoothly. Officers from the Alausa Police Division were notified and responded swiftly.

The body of the deceased was taken by police to the General Hospital mortuary in Ikeja after LASTMA officials completed their work at the scene.

Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the importance of adhering to road safety protocols. He urged cyclists to wear protective gear and avoid distractions, stressing the importance of exercising caution and not competing with motorized vehicles for road space.

“LASTMA is committed to promoting safer roads across Lagos State,” he added.
