Army Chief Warns Civilians Wearing Military Camouflage Could Face Legal Action
The Chief of Civil-Military Affairs of the Nigerian Army, Major General Gold Chibuisi, has issued a stern warning that civilians caught wearing military uniforms illegally will face arrest and prosecution in accordance with Nigerian law.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in Abuja during a media briefing with defense correspondents on Saturday night, Chibuisi emphasized that while wearing military uniforms is prohibited for non-military personnel, the Army does not condone violence in dealing with offenders.
“It is unlawful to wear military uniforms if you are not part of the armed forces,” Chibuisi stated. “If our personnel encounter anyone wearing military camouflage, they are to remove the individual from the uniform, arrest them, and hand them over to the police for prosecution. Assaulting civilians for this reason is not acceptable.”
However, the Army Chief also clarified that soldiers are prohibited from harassing civilians found wearing military gear. He confirmed that some soldiers had been disciplined for mistreating civilians in military attire, highlighting that professionalism is essential when enforcing such laws.
“We sanction those found guilty, and we do so strictly when evidence is clear,” Chibuisi added.
The Army Chief further urged the public to respect military uniforms, noting that the growing misuse of military apparel by criminals is making it increasingly difficult for both citizens and law enforcement agencies to distinguish between real soldiers and impostors.
“There are many criminals now using military uniforms to carry out illegal activities,” he said. “If this continues, how will anyone be able to tell the difference between a genuine soldier and a criminal?”
Chibuisi also appealed to communities and families to discourage the illegal use of military uniforms, whether worn for jogging or driving, stressing the need for individuals to act responsibly.
“If you know someone who is not in the military and is wearing our uniform, please advise them against it,” he urged.
The Army Chief also reiterated that the Nigerian Army serves the people and should not be viewed with suspicion. “We belong to the Nigerian people, and we are here to serve them,” he said.
As part of efforts to strengthen civil-military relations, Chibuisi revealed that the Army is intensifying public awareness campaigns aimed at improving interactions between soldiers and civilians. “We are refining the conduct of our personnel, and as we continue to engage with the public, we hope the relationship will continue to improve,” he concluded.
