Abule Taylor Residents Raise Alarm Over Mounting Waste Crisis Amid PSP Absence

Published

on

Residents of the Abule Taylor community in Lagos State are sounding the alarm over an escalating waste management problem, triggered by the prolonged disappearance of Private Sector Participants (PSP) responsible for refuse collection.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In interviews conducted across Obabunmi Thomas Street, Dada Olowu Street, Abiodun Aina Street, and nearby areas, residents expressed deep frustration over the inefficiency and subsequent withdrawal of PSP operators without any formal notice. With heaps of garbage now littering the streets, fears are rising over imminent health dangers and environmental hazards, particularly as the rainy season approaches.

“There’s an urgent need for PSP operators to resume operations before the rains come. Otherwise, our drainage systems could be clogged instantly,” warned Adebowale Olusola, a concerned resident.

Olusola further disclosed that community development associations (CDAs) have made several attempts to reinstate PSP services, but operators cite road inaccessibility as a major impediment. He challenged this claim, noting that private vehicles still navigate the roads with ease, and that residents consistently paid for refuse services when they were operational. He urged the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) to step in swiftly.

Adding to the woes, residents reported that the frontage of a Redeemed Christian Church near Abule Taylor bus stop has become an unofficial dumpsite. Despite the church’s efforts—such as deploying security personnel and erecting fences—passersby continue to dispose of waste illegally.

A church spokesperson expressed exasperation, stating that the unauthorized dumping not only mars the sanctity of the place of worship but also worsens environmental degradation and heightens public health threats.

Both residents and the church are now calling on LAWMA and PSP operators to urgently reinstate waste collection services. They warned that without immediate intervention, the area could experience severe flooding and a looming public health emergency.

The growing dissatisfaction among Abule Taylor residents highlights the urgent need for a more responsive and inclusive waste management strategy across Lagos, especially in underserved urban communities facing infrastructural challenges.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
