Tragedy in Rivers: Fresh Explosion Claims Five Lives in Omoku

Fyneface Dumnamene, an environmental activist and Executive Director of the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, confirmed the incident through a statement issued on Saturday.
Preliminary findings suggest the explosion occurred inside a residential property being used to store illegally refined petroleum products.
According to Dumnamene, the occupants of the house were known to stockpile illicitly refined kerosene and other petroleum products, which they resold to the public.
His statement detailed, “The explosion happened late Saturday morning, April 26, around 11 a.m., claiming the lives of five individuals—four females and one male—all burnt beyond recognition.”
Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, also verified the incident and the number of casualties. She explained that the explosion was triggered by a resident who lit a cooking stove while preparing noodles inside the premises, which ignited the stored fuel.
This tragic event follows two separate pipeline explosions that occurred in Rivers State in March—one at the Trans-Niger Pipeline in Bodo, Gokana Local Government Area, and another at a pipeline manifold in the Omwawriwa community, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
In response to the escalating incidents, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state administrator on March 18, 2025.
