Terror Highways: How Foreign Militants Exploit Nigeria’s Porous Borders

Published

on

Foreign militants are increasingly exploiting unmonitored spaces and routes across northern Nigeria, infiltrating the country and unleashing brutal attacks on vulnerable communities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Security sources informed our correspondents that terrorists have entrenched multiple smuggling and trafficking corridors across states like Borno, Adamawa, Sokoto, Katsina, and Zamfara, often disguising themselves as farmers, herders, or traders to blend in.

Retired military officer Akogun-Abudu Olumayowa explained that these vast, scarcely monitored areas, coupled with the absence of immigration checks, have facilitated the organized infiltration. Some groups manipulate local populations using religious sentiment, allegedly aided by political figures.

Evidence of these established routes, particularly those for arms trafficking, was obtained by Sunday PUNCH.

Earlier this year, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, warned about foreign funding backing terrorist cells within Nigeria. Arrested insurgents were reportedly found with foreign currencies, prompting intensified military collaboration with international partners to disrupt funding sources.

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, also pointed fingers at foreign elements after a deadly attack, noting their non-Nigerian appearance, language, and tactics. According to him, traditional herders are easily distinguishable, unlike the heavily armed invaders who resemble outsiders.

Recent attacks, such as the killing of over 113 people in Plateau State and 85 more in Benue State, underline the devastating impact of these foreign incursions.

Terrorist Entry Points and Strongholds:

  • In Borno, terrorists operate via Wulgo village in Gamboru Ngala, near Lake Chad and the Cameroon border. The area’s vast, open terrain and proximity to multiple borders make it vulnerable. Terrorists reportedly lay landmines to evade military interception.

  • Katsina faces threats through forest routes connecting Mallamawa and Gurbin Baure to Zamfara. These pathways, frequently used by motorcycle-riding gunmen, remain hotspots for attacks.

  • In Sokoto, communities near Bale, Gudu Local Government Area, and Tangaza suffer constant cross-border raids from Niger Republic and Zamfara. Analysts report daily assaults and brazen daylight kidnappings along major roads.

Regional Dynamics:

The broader Sahel region, encompassing nations like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, has become a cauldron of armed conflicts. As instability grows, Nigeria’s northern states are increasingly exposed to insurgent spillovers. Many Sahelian countries are under military rule, weakening regional coordination against terrorist threats.

Security experts stress that Nigeria’s porous borders, spanning several northern states, have become prime gateways for criminals and insurgents.

Dr. Kabir Adamu, CEO of Beacon Consulting, emphasized the urgent need for stronger surveillance, warning that Nigeria’s strategic significance makes it a prime target for terrorist expansion.

Former DSS Director Mike Ejiofor also raised alarms about the ambiguous origins of the infiltrators, noting their unfamiliar languages and questioning how such heavily armed groups bypass border controls under existing ECOWAS free movement protocols.

The worsening security situation, driven by cross-border terrorism and Nigeria’s unfortified boundaries, underscores the need for urgent, coordinated action.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
