This was disclosed on Sunday in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, in Asaba, the state capital.
According to Edafe, following actionable intelligence, operatives raided a hideout located within the Agu-Amawbia forest in Anambra State, where they recovered an AK-47 rifle and 132 rounds of live ammunition.
He further revealed that the investigation led the police to another hideout situated between Issele-Asagba and Otulu, where a gang led by one Bellow Abubakar was lying in wait.
“Upon sighting the police, the suspects opened fire, triggering a fierce gun duel,” Edafe said. “However, the operatives, prepared for confrontation, responded decisively.”
The suspected kidnappers, overwhelmed by the superior firepower, fled in various directions, many sustaining bullet wounds.
Five of the suspects, including gang leader Bellow Abubakar, were captured but succumbed to their injuries after being taken to the hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
Further combing of the forest led to the recovery of two additional AK-47 rifles and 18 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. A manhunt is ongoing to apprehend the injured suspects who managed to escape.
