Naija News reports that the late pontiff, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in the Flores district of Buenos Aires, Argentina, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025.
The burial ceremony, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, commenced at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT) on Saturday. It marked a deeply emotional farewell to a pope who had dedicated his life to service, humility, and reform within the Catholic Church.
The Requiem Mass was celebrated by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, who was joined by around 250 Cardinals, Patriarchs, Archbishops, Bishops, priests, religious figures, and lay faithful.
In his homily, Cardinal Re reflected on the remarkable 12-year papacy of Pope Francis, emphasizing his unwavering closeness to the people, his spontaneous nature, and, most significantly, his profound love for the Church.
“Spiritually united with all of Christianity, we gather in great numbers to pray for Pope Francis, that God may receive him into His boundless love,” Cardinal Re said.
He recalled how Pope Francis would often end his addresses and personal meetings with a simple yet powerful request: “Do not forget to pray for me.” Cardinal Re continued, “Now, dear Pope Francis, we ask you to pray for us. May you bless the Church, bless Rome, and bless the whole world from heaven, just as you did last Sunday from the balcony of this Basilica—your final embrace of the people of God and humanity at large, a humanity that searches sincerely for truth and holds high the flame of hope.”
The funeral drew world leaders, dignitaries, and faithful from across the globe to Rome, reflecting the immense influence and legacy Pope Francis leaves behind.
