Benue Crisis Deepens: Traditional Ruler Alleges Herdsmen Have Occupied Nearly All LGs
The Ter Tyoshin and Chairman of the Gwer West Traditional Council in Benue State, Daniel Abomtse, has raised alarm over the increasing dominance of herdsmen in the state, claiming that almost all the local government areas (LGAs) have been occupied.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, Ter Tyoshin lamented that communities such as Agatu, Ukum, and Gwer had been heavily attacked by herdsmen, with many residents displaced and forced to seek refuge in local government headquarters like Naka.
Governor Hyacinth Alia has emphasized that these attacks are not mere farmer-herder conflicts but are aimed at ethnic cleansing, with the goal of displacing indigenous communities from their ancestral lands.
According to Ter Tyoshin, the situation in Benue is far more dire than the well-publicized terrorist activities in Borno State. Since the beginning of these attacks in 2011, herdsmen have progressively taken control of all 23 LGAs, with entire districts within the Gwer West area and many other localities now under siege.
Abomtse described how most roads in the state, such as Naka-Adoka, Naka-Taraku, and Naka-Makurdi, had become impassable, making it dangerous for residents and travelers. He added that in districts like Kwande, Guma, and Logo, herdsmen have completely overrun the areas, leaving little hope for the indigenous people who once lived there.
He pointed out that over two-thirds of the state’s LGAs are now under the control of these armed herdsmen, and the violence and displacement have escalated. This alarming situation has not received the attention it deserves, as Abomtse believes that it is underreported and far worse than the crisis in any other state, including Borno.
“There is an urgent need to liberate these LGAs and their people. What we are experiencing in Benue is not comparable to the challenges faced in any other part of the country,” he added.
