Speaking on the development, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, emphasized that this number reflects more than mere statistics — it represents a growing sense of hope among Nigerian families.
“We are witnessing a strong desire for opportunities, and NELFUND is proud to contribute meaningfully to this transformation,” Sawyerr stated.
He further explained that since the student loan portal was launched, applicants have actively pursued funding for both tuition and living expenses, demonstrating the relevance and critical timing of the Fund’s mission.
Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to transparency, accessibility, and operational efficiency, Sawyerr called on all stakeholders to support the vision of inclusive education for every Nigerian. He also encouraged students to reach out for support and additional information where needed.
In a related development, the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board (FGSHLB) has initiated steps to recover housing loans from retired civil servants who defaulted on their repayment obligations.
According to a statement released by the Board’s Head of Information and Public Relations, Ngozi Obiechina, this action follows a directive from the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation.
The Executive Secretary of FGSHLB, Salamatu Ahmed, clarified that the measure is in alignment with the Public Service Rules, which require all retiring officers to obtain a Certificate of Non-Indebtedness before exit.
The names of retirees with outstanding housing loan debts are currently being compiled, as the Board seeks to reclaim mortgaged properties held by defaulters.
