Dele Momodu Slams Political Defections, Says ‘Nothing Surprises Me Anymore’
Veteran journalist and political figure, Dele Momodu, has criticized the recent wave of defections by prominent Delta State politicians from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that such developments no longer surprise him given Nigeria’s political history.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Momodu described the defections—particularly those involving Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa—as part of a recurring pattern in the country’s political landscape. He remarked that the phenomenon is deeply rooted in Nigeria’s system, where power dynamics often drive political realignment.
“I’ve studied Nigeria’s political history extensively—nothing surprises me anymore,” he said. “Our political narrative is filled with stories of strategic defections. You’d be hard-pressed to find any top politician who hasn’t faced pressure from agencies like the EFCC, ICPC, or the Special Fraud Unit at one point or another.”
Momodu emphasized that fear of prosecution and loss of political privileges are motivating factors for politicians jumping ship to the ruling party. He drew a contrast between the bravery of past African leaders and today’s politicians, who, according to him, prioritize comfort and personal gain over sacrifice.
“Back in the day, we admired icons like Nelson Mandela, Jomo Kenyatta, MKO Abiola, and Chief Awolowo for standing their ground—even if it meant going to jail. Today, nobody wants to face detention. Everyone wants to stay home and enjoy the wealth they’ve amassed in politics,” he said.
He further asserted that the current administration employs a “carrot and stick” strategy to consolidate power. “If they can’t persuade you, they’ll pressure you—and it seems the pressure is working,” Momodu added.
The remarks come amid growing public debate over the integrity of opposition politics in Nigeria, with increasing concerns about the independence of anti-graft agencies and the implications of mass defections for democratic stability.
