Rivers Crisis: Sole Administrator Ibas Appeals to CAN for Peacebuilding Support

During a strategic meeting with the leadership of the Rivers State chapter of CAN at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Ibas emphasized the pivotal role of the church in shaping moral direction and reinforcing social harmony.
The meeting coincided with continued street demonstrations by supporters of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara. For the second week, hundreds have gathered in protest, demanding his reinstatement following the declaration of emergency rule by President Bola Tinubu.
Ibas, through a statement by his Senior Special Adviser, Hector Igbikiowubo, outlined his core mandate: to restore law and order, ensure political stabilization, and prepare the ground for a return to democratic rule in the state. Since assuming office on March 20, 2025, he has initiated dialogue with civil society organizations, traditional leaders, and local government stakeholders to build trust and promote collaborative governance.
He appealed to CAN to use its platform to advocate for peace, bridge ethnic and political divides, and encourage reconciliation across communities.
“The unity of the church lays the foundation for the unity of the state. When the church leads in love, society will follow in peace,” Ibas noted.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and justice, stressing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through collective efforts anchored in dialogue and mutual respect.
Referencing his Easter message, Ibas urged church leaders to remain “steadfast in prayer and courageous in truth.” He expressed optimism that with CAN’s partnership and divine support, Rivers State would emerge more resilient and unified.
He concluded that the dialogue with CAN is part of broader efforts to engage critical stakeholders in guiding Rivers State toward a peaceful and democratic transition.
