President Tinubu Holds Crucial Meeting with Suspended Rivers Governor Fubara in London
Reports surfaced on Tuesday revealing that President Bola Tinubu held a private meeting with the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, during his recent working visit to London. The meeting, initiated by Governor Fubara, comes amid the ongoing political crisis in the state, though the Presidency has not issued an official statement regarding the encounter.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Efforts to obtain confirmation or a detailed statement from the Presidency have been unsuccessful, as no representatives were available to provide clarity. However, an anonymous source familiar with the meeting disclosed that it marked the first face-to-face interaction between President Tinubu and Governor Fubara since the President invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution on March 18. This led to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of both Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, alongside the entire House of Assembly.
In his national address, President Tinubu explained that the decision was prompted by “months of intense political instability” that had crippled governance and posed a threat to national stability. Following the declaration, Tinubu appointed Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the former Chief of Naval Staff, as the sole administrator of the state.
During their London meeting, sources indicated that President Tinubu and Governor Fubara discussed potential measures to restore effective governance in Rivers State. While the specifics of their discussion were not disclosed, there were hints that Fubara’s suspension might be lifted before the completion of the six-month term. However, it is also noted that Nyesom Wike, Fubara’s former political mentor and the current Federal Capital Territory Minister, was not part of the discussions and seemed uneasy about any decisions being made without his involvement.
The ongoing political developments in Rivers State continue to attract attention as key stakeholders consider the best path forward.
