IG Deploys Special Anti-Bandit Squads as Violence Escalates Nationwide
The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the deployment of specialized squads to combat the growing violence linked to bandits across Nigeria. This decision follows a series of deadly attacks in Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto states, which resulted in the loss of 21 lives.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a meeting with Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Commanders in Abuja, Egbetokun directed that at least one fully equipped, combat-ready unit be kept on standby by every squadron, with immediate effect. The police chief emphasized the importance of these units being ready to provide rapid assistance during crises, high-risk operations, or emergency interventions.
“This squadron must be swift, decisive, and prepared to support their respective state commands at a moment’s notice,” Egbetokun stated. He further announced that, starting immediately, each squadron would undergo quarterly training sessions that focus not only on operational skills but also on ethics, professionalism, and the principles of responsible policing.
In a move aimed at improving efficiency and responsiveness, Egbetokun also disclosed that PMF squadron sizes would be reviewed and adjusted. Commanders will now be held accountable for the actions of their personnel, with greater emphasis placed on discipline, respect for human rights, and operational excellence.
The IG reiterated the earlier directive to withdraw PMF officers from non-core assignments, such as escort duties, which have drained the force’s operational capabilities. This realignment, he stressed, would refocus resources on combating violent crime and securing national stability.
Meanwhile, recent violent attacks in Kwara state saw gunmen kill six people at a motor park in Ilesha Baruba and a vigilante member during a patrol near Kainji National Park. Police investigations have led to the arrest of an informant linked to a bandit network. Efforts to restore security in the region are ongoing.
In Benue, a suspected bandit identified as ‘Government’ reportedly killed 11 individuals, while attacks in Sokoto’s Tangaza Local Government Area left more residents dead. These developments have sparked widespread concerns over the growing insecurity across various states.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, assured Nigerians that the government is fully committed to addressing these challenges. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to confront the issue with a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy aimed at bringing an end to the escalating violence.
Additionally, security officials in Kwara and Sokoto have promised more tactical interventions, with increased intelligence gathering and collaboration among various security agencies.
