Federal Government Orders Full Closure of Lagos’ Ijora Bridge for Safety Works

This was revealed by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, during a recent inspection of the bridge, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). She explained that the bridge, which links the Ijora Causeway to Apapa, is in urgent need of comprehensive rehabilitation—particularly the replacement of worn-out bearings located beneath the deck.
Kesha stated that this project marks the final phase of a series of repair works that have been underway in different stages. She highlighted that approximately 50 damaged bearings will be replaced across three critical segments of the structure, which involves lifting the entire deck.
She emphasized the bridge’s strategic role in connecting road users to the Apapa and Tincan Island ports, two of Nigeria’s busiest seaports. Acknowledging the potential disruptions the closure may cause, Kesha appealed to the public for patience and understanding, stressing that the repairs are time-sensitive and vital for public safety.
While assuring that the bridge is not on the verge of collapse, she warned that the current level of vibrations felt while driving on it indicates severe deterioration of the support structures. “The spring-like bearings under the bridge have significantly weakened and need urgent intervention,” she said.
