Benue Alleges Invasion by Armed Terrorists Seeking Ancestral Lands
The Benue State Government has disclosed that recent violent attacks on several of its communities are being carried out by organized criminal groups aiming to forcibly seize land from indigenous residents.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
This revelation was made by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Hyacinth Alia, Mr. Tersoo Kula, during a live appearance on Channels Television’s program, The Morning Brief, on Tuesday.
Kula described the perpetrators as terrorists who arrive on motorcycles and are armed with AK-47 rifles, systematically driving people out of their ancestral homes. He emphasized that the attacks are well-coordinated and not the typical farmer-herder conflicts as often portrayed in public discourse.
“What is happening in Benue is tragic,” Kula stated. “These are not random incidents — they are deliberate, planned attacks intended to displace communities and take over their land.”
Providing an update, Kula confirmed that the death toll from the attacks, particularly in Ukum and Logo local government areas, has tragically risen to 72. He noted that the assailants often target vulnerable locations such as farms, markets, and even places of worship, further heightening the brutality of the incidents.
“These people arrive in large groups from neighboring states,” he said. “They don’t just attack indiscriminately — they focus on key community spaces.”
Kula also criticized the media and public for mischaracterizing the violence as mere “clashes,” arguing that such terminology dilutes the severity of the situation.
“When people are ambushed in their own homes or on their farms without provocation, we must call it what it is — terrorism,” he stressed. “Labeling these atrocities as clashes only distorts the truth and hinders effective response.”
The government’s position aims to correct the narrative surrounding the crisis and to galvanize more robust national attention and action against the escalating violence in the state.
