Babachir Lawal Fires Back at Shittu Over ‘Dead Horse’ CPC Remark

Published

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has strongly criticized former Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, and other ex-members of the now-defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), branding them as “black sheep” within the party’s legacy structure.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Lawal, a founding figure in CPC and a prominent voice in the ongoing political realignment involving Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir El-Rufai, made the statement in response to recent remarks made by Shittu on Channels TV’s Politics Today. In the interview, Shittu dismissed CPC as a “dead horse” and accused Lawal and others, including former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, of being political troublemakers.

Speaking with Punch, Lawal rebutted the claims, stating that individuals like Shittu never truly aligned with CPC’s core values. He accused them of joining the party solely for personal gain and lacking the resilience to endure hardship or uphold ideological consistency.

“We know not everyone can endure hunger,” Lawal said. “Some of them came into CPC merely to secure benefits. Deep down, they weren’t committed to the party’s principles. Such individuals are understandably drifting toward opportunities where positions are available.”

Lawal further criticized the current administration under President Bola Tinubu, claiming it has subjected many Nigerians to severe economic hardship. According to him, those who were part of CPC for genuine reasons remain steadfast, while others are scrambling for positions as the government continues to fill ambassadorial slots and board appointments.

He added, “There’s talk that Tinubu may reshuffle his cabinet. So those more interested in political appointments than principles will naturally align where they can negotiate positions—whether from CPC or elsewhere.”

Lawal’s comments add to the growing discourse around internal party dynamics, ideological loyalty, and governance under the current administration.
