Political Tension Escalates as Bauchi Deputy Governor and Foreign Minister Clash
A political confrontation between Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, reached a boiling point on Friday during Vice President Kashim Shettima’s visit to the state. The altercation, reportedly involving Deputy Governor Mohammed Auwal Jatau and Tuggar, took place inside a coaster bus transporting dignitaries from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport to the Emir’s Palace for the turbaning ceremony of former Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Reports suggest that the confrontation began when Tuggar allegedly made derogatory comments about Governor Bala’s administration, which angered Jatau. Eyewitnesses claimed that Jatau confronted Tuggar and, in some accounts, slapped the minister. However, Jatau later denied these allegations, and his spokesperson labeled them as “baseless,” asserting that no such incident occurred.
This clash is part of a broader power struggle between the two men, as both position themselves for the 2027 Bauchi governorship race. Jatau, a loyal ally of Governor Bala, is seen as defending the governor’s administration, while Tuggar has been a vocal critic of the PDP-led government, with hopes of securing the APC’s governorship ticket, backed by President Tinubu’s support.
Political analysts have expressed concern about the potential fallout from such altercations, warning that it could heighten tensions among supporters and disrupt the political climate in Bauchi. Comrade Sabo Muhammad criticized the incident, emphasizing that such behavior could set a dangerous precedent, leading to further violence in the state’s politics.
The feud between Governor Bala and Tuggar, fueled by the latter’s public criticism of the former’s use of President Tinubu’s tax reforms for his perceived 2027 presidential ambitions, continues to dominate the political landscape. The rivalry between Jatau and Tuggar, both from Bauchi North Senatorial District, adds another layer of complexity, with both men eyeing the governorship position for the first time from a region that has not produced a governor since 1999.
Efforts to contact Alhaji Uba Nana, the Director-General of the Tuggar Foundation, for comments were unsuccessful.
