Edo Governor Declares Death by Hanging for Kidnappers in New Crackdown
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has declared that individuals convicted of kidnapping in the state will face the death penalty by hanging.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The governor made this firm declaration during a stakeholder meeting held at the Uromi Town Hall with members and leaders of the Arewa community in Esan land.
This position was disclosed in a statement released by the governor’s Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Friday. Okpebholo noted that the Edo State House of Assembly had recently passed an amendment to the Kidnapping Prohibition Law of 2013, which now prescribes capital punishment for kidnapping and allows for the confiscation and demolition of properties used to facilitate such crimes.
Expressing zero tolerance for criminality, Governor Okpebholo stated that his administration is determined to rid Edo State of insecurity, violence, and abductions. He emphasized that the new legislation empowers the state to take decisive actions, including demolishing properties linked to kidnappers and repurposing the land for public security initiatives, such as constructing offices for local vigilante groups.
“I take the issue of security very seriously and will strictly enforce the law. This new legislation gives us the authority to demolish and seize properties tied to kidnapping activities. We will publicly execute offenders, in line with the provisions of the law, and I am ready to sign the death warrants,” the governor stated.
He further urged residents to work with his administration in the fight against insecurity, stressing that security is a collective responsibility and not that of the government alone.
