2027 Elections: Al-Makura-Led CPC Bloc Rejects Atiku’s Coalition, Declares Loyalty to Tinubu

The North-Central Forum of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has praised the former Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc, led by ex-Nasarawa State Governor Senator Tanko Al-Makura, for distancing themselves from an emerging opposition coalition targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The commendation was made in a statement released on Thursday by the Forum’s Chairman, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, who also served on the APC campaign council during the 2023 elections.

The opposition alliance, spearheaded by former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, aims to unseat Tinubu in the upcoming polls. The coalition is reportedly composed of key figures such as former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai—who recently joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP)—and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Speculations about a possible defection of the CPC bloc to this coalition intensified after El-Rufai claimed to have received former President Muhammadu Buhari’s blessing before exiting the APC. These rumors gained further traction following a recent meeting between Buhari, Atiku, El-Rufai, and other opposition leaders in Kaduna.

However, in a decisive move, Al-Makura and over 20 other former CPC stakeholders met in Abuja on Wednesday and reaffirmed their allegiance to the APC and President Tinubu. The group categorically dismissed reports of internal dissent, stating their continued commitment to the ruling party’s ideals and vision.

In the joint statement signed by Al-Makura, former Katsina Governor Bello Masari, and other prominent CPC figures, they emphasized their dedication to the APC’s leadership and denounced attempts to sway their loyalty. They labeled the ongoing opposition mobilization as baseless and politically motivated.

In response, the North-Central APC Forum applauded Al-Makura’s decision, noting it underscored the region’s unwavering support for Tinubu and the APC. The Forum expressed renewed confidence in their goal of delivering six million votes from the region in the 2027 elections.

The statement criticized the opposition coalition as a group of disgruntled politicians who are driven by personal grievances rather than national interest. The Forum called on Nigerians to reject what it described as an attempt to derail the current administration’s progress.

The Forum further argued that the North-Central, historically instrumental in the formation of the APC, had been sidelined under Buhari’s presidency despite contributing significantly—including having the only sitting governor, Al-Makura, during the 2013 merger that birthed the APC.

Highlighting that Buhari’s administration favored the North-East and North-West in terms of appointments and infrastructure, the Forum praised Tinubu’s government for correcting this imbalance. They pointed to recent projects, appointments, and security interventions in the North-Central as proof of renewed inclusion and recognition.

Reaffirming its endorsement of Tinubu for a second term, the Forum emphasized that the region is solidly behind the President and remains a cornerstone of the APC’s political strength.

Makinde made the declaration on Thursday during the APM South-West town hall meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He expressed confidence that the party would secure a sweeping victory in the 2027 polls, describing its agenda as a plan to reset the country.

Makinde made the prediction after Mohammed was introduced at the gathering and described as an incoming senator.

Speaking at the event, the APM presidential candidate said, “Well, APM is going to win this election overwhelmingly because this is the reset agenda being put before Nigerians, so I dare to say that my national leader is the incoming Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He urged Nigerians to listen to the party’s message and support its proposed agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.

Makinde also discussed the qualities he believes Nigerians should consider when choosing their next president, arguing that physical energy and the ability to tackle national challenges should take precedence over age.

According to him, the next president must possess the stamina to work long hours and respond effectively to the country’s pressing problems.

He stated, “While I will not make age an issue in this campaign, I will make energy, having energy, being able to stay up late to deal with the challenges we face as a country.”

Makinde further challenged presidential candidates to demonstrate their physical fitness, urging voters to consider their capacity to handle the demands of the presidency.

“So please, when they bring their presidential candidates, let the candidates be able to jump, and if they can do that, vote for them,” he added.
