Speaker Abbas Laments Underfunding of National Assembly, Launches Digital Platforms to Boost Legislative Efficiency

Speaking through his representative, Hon. Amadi Victor Obuzor, during the launch of three new digital legislative tools in Abuja on Wednesday, Abbas stated that many Nigerians mistakenly believe that the legislature is overfunded. In reality, he emphasized, it operates under severe financial limitations.
“Contrary to popular belief, the National Assembly suffers the worst funding shortfall among all arms of government,” Abbas said. “Independent assessments by development partners have validated this concern.”
The unveiling ceremony introduced three digital tools—PLAC Bills Track, the Legislative Agenda Tracker, and the Legislative Repository—developed by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) in collaboration with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office. These platforms aim to enhance transparency, improve public access to legislative information, and foster civic engagement.
Omolara Akinyeye, Deputy Executive Director at PLAC, explained that the platforms allow users to follow the progress of bills, view full legislative texts, and explore data visualizations and policy analysis.
PLAC Executive Director Clement Nwankwo added that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to reinforce legislative oversight, accountability, and representation. He highlighted the increasing pressure on lawmakers from their constituents and stakeholders, stressing the need for legislators to stay focused on their core responsibilities.
“These platforms are vital tools designed to keep both legislators and citizens informed and engaged in the democratic process,” Nwankwo stated.
