Niger Assembly Moves to Criminalize Thuggery, Tackle Youth Restiveness
The Niger State House of Assembly has vowed to implement decisive legislative measures to curb rising incidents of thuggery and youth unrest, particularly in Minna, the state capital.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaker of the House, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, made this known to journalists following a strategic meeting with top security officials, including the State Commissioner of Police, the Commandant of the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, and other key security heads.
Sarkindaji described the growing activities of youth gangs as alarming, noting that despite previous government efforts to improve security, thuggery has emerged as a fresh threat to public safety. He stressed that these criminal acts—marked by harassment and violence against innocent citizens—had gone too far and now demanded urgent intervention.
The Speaker warned that anyone, including politicians, found to be financing or supporting thuggish behavior would be publicly named and prosecuted under the law.
As part of the Assembly’s response, Sarkindaji said lawmakers were prepared to revisit and amend relevant legislation. He also hinted that the House may propose a new law to classify thuggery as a capital offense, given the number of lives already lost to such violence.
“No investor will be willing to put money into a volatile environment,” he stated, underlining the threat that insecurity poses to the current administration’s ‘New Niger Agenda.’
He concluded by assuring that the House would continue to work closely with the state’s executive arm and provide both legal and logistical support to strengthen security operations across Niger State.
