Kenneth Okonkwo Slams Rivers Sole Administrator, Declares All Actions Illegal

In a statement shared on his official (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Okonkwo expressed concern over the deteriorating state of democracy in Rivers, calling out President Bola Tinubu’s administration for endorsing the current political arrangement in the state. He insisted that all decisions made by Ibas since his appointment lack legal backing and contravene democratic norms.
Okonkwo, who previously served as a spokesperson for Peter Obi’s presidential campaign, strongly opposed the appointment of sole administrators in local government areas, the recent composition of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), and other governance activities carried out under Ibas’ watch. He noted that these actions are not only illegal but also reflect a troubling slide into autocracy.
He emphasized the Supreme Court’s position against the use of unelected officials to administer local councils, referencing the judgment secured by Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi. According to Okonkwo, it is contradictory and shameful for the same administration that championed the court’s ruling to now appoint a sole administrator in Rivers State.
Describing Ibas as a military figure acting without legislative oversight, Okonkwo warned that Rivers is descending into authoritarian rule under the guise of democracy. “Rivers is deteriorating not just because of the actions of bad actors, but due to the silence of good people,” he said.
He condemned Ibas for allegedly making financial decisions without legislative approval and attempting to organize state elections without proper legal procedures. Okonkwo called on citizens, lawmakers, and civil society to speak out and reject what he termed as the imposition of “military martial law” in a civilian regime.
He concluded by urging a return to constitutional governance, stating, “Nigeria must never again be subjected to military rule or civilian dictatorship. Rule of law must triumph over rule of force.”
