Remote Work, Rising Insecurity: Expert Recommends Martial Arts for Nigerians

Cowan, a British-born practitioner with over 25 years of experience, noted in a statement on Monday that martial arts—especially BJJ—should be embraced early in life due to its transformative effects on the human body and mind, particularly in children.
Highlighting the growing sedentary lifestyle caused by the rise of remote work, Cowan advocated for Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu as an ideal way to stay active and healthy. According to him, BJJ is not merely a sport but a lifestyle that enhances fitness, personal discipline, and mental resilience.
“From Africa to Asia, and from Europe to the Americas, everyone should explore martial arts. The benefits are too significant to be limited by geography,” Cowan said.
He described BJJ as a modern, dynamic discipline gaining popularity both as a competitive sport and an effective self-defense system. Unlike traditional martial arts that rely heavily on striking, BJJ focuses on grappling, leverage, and ground control—making it suitable for individuals of all sizes and strength levels.
“Regular training in BJJ improves cardiovascular endurance, strength, flexibility, and coordination. It’s one of the most complete full-body workouts you can find,” Cowan explained.
Beyond the physical advantages, Cowan also emphasized the mental gains. He described BJJ as “human chess,” where practitioners develop quick thinking, strategic planning, and problem-solving under pressure. These skills, he noted, translate into everyday life, helping individuals become more focused, resilient, and confident in their decision-making.
Cowan concluded by stressing the importance of instilling values such as discipline, humility, and respect through martial arts practice, both inside and outside the training hall.

In a viral video detailing the incident, Sandra explained that hours after participating in the morning service, taking communion, and paying her regular offering, she attempted to fund a voucher purchase by transferring N1,640,200 to her personal Zenith Bank account. Instead, the heavy sum was erroneously sent to the church account.

The Borno State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Youths and Sports, Hon. Saina Buba, has formally retracted and apologized for a controversial statement he made during a public engagement hosted by the City Boy Movement in Maiduguri. During a press briefing with journalists at his office in Maiduguri, Hon. Buba completely withdrew the remark and issued an apology to anyone offended by the rhetoric. He explicitly noted that his words were never meant to infringe upon or undermine the constitutional rights of Borno State citizens regarding their freedom of choice and association under the Nigerian Constitution. Furthermore, he clarified that his statements were not meant to be interpreted literally, but due to the ongoing public anxiety and concern, a formal retraction was necessary.
The commissioner also emphasized that his fiery rhetoric does not reflect the core principles of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the governance style and administration of Governor Babagana Umara Zulum. He reiterated that the state government stays firmly dedicated to safeguarding the rights of all residents and upholding democratic values.
