Labour Party Debunks HURIWA’s Claims, Reaffirms Abure’s Leadership
The Labour Party has firmly rejected allegations by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), which questioned the legitimacy of its National Chairman, Julius Abure. In a statement reported by Nivo News, the party described the accusations as baseless and misleading, asserting that no Supreme Court ruling has invalidated Abure’s position.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The rebuttal came through a statement issued on Monday by Marcel Ngogbehei, Director-General of the party’s Directorate of Mobilization and Integration. Ngogbehei emphasized that Abure was lawfully elected during the Labour Party’s National Convention held on March 27, 2024, in accordance with both the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
He clarified that the cited Supreme Court decision referenced by HURIWA had no bearing on the convention or its outcomes. According to Ngogbehei, there is no legal judgment that nullifies Abure’s election or disqualifies him from holding the office of National Chairman.
The party criticized HURIWA for allegedly misrepresenting legal facts and spreading misinformation. It urged the group to seek sound legal advice before making public declarations, especially on matters of national importance.
“It is disheartening that an organization that claims to stand for the rule of law would circulate such an unfounded narrative,” Ngogbehei stated. He warned that such actions could escalate political tensions and promote disregard for democratic institutions.
Reaffirming its stance, the Labour Party reiterated its dedication to internal democracy, adherence to legal processes, and the continued unity of the party. It called on stakeholders and the general public to resist narratives that could destabilize democratic governance or threaten institutional integrity.
