FUOYE VC Suspended Amidst Sexual Harassment Allegations by Senior Staff

Published

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment made by a senior staff member, Engineer Folasade Adebayo. This development came after the university’s Governing Council responded to pressure from the Federal Ministry of Education.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sources revealed to SaharaReporters that Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed strong disapproval over the Council’s initial handling of the case. The Council had reportedly recommended that the complainant issue an apology to the Vice-Chancellor, a move that sparked significant outrage and was seen as an attempt to downplay the seriousness of the allegation.

Reacting to the minister’s dissatisfaction, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), convened an emergency online meeting on Monday. At the conclusion of this meeting, the Council approved Professor Fasina’s request to proceed on his accumulated leave instead of being suspended outright.

According to university policy, Vice-Chancellors approaching the final months of their tenure may opt to utilize their remaining leave. Professor Fasina, whose tenure ends in August, was therefore granted six months’ leave, effective immediately.

To maintain academic leadership, the Council appointed Professor Samuel Olubunmi Shittu, a soil science expert and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), as Acting Vice-Chancellor for the six-month period.

The decisions were officially confirmed in a statement by the university’s Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mufutau A. Ibrahim. The statement outlined that Professor Fasina would begin his 126-day accumulated annual and research leave immediately and that Professor Shittu, the most senior among the Deputy Vice-Chancellors, would serve in acting capacity for the duration.

This development marks a significant leadership shift at FUOYE amidst growing concerns about institutional responses to sexual misconduct within Nigerian higher education.

The legal firm Ogbeide Associates, representing a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, requesting a formal investigation into PDP secretary Samuel Anyanwu and factional National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Key aspects of the petition include:

  • Allegations of False Representation: The petition challenges a November 3, 2025, letter sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which falsely claimed that the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had replaced acting national chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum with Mohammed.

  • Contradictory NWC Records: Petitioners assert that the NWC’s November 1, 2025, emergency meeting actually resulted in the suspension of Anyanwu and three other officers due to alleged anti-party activities, and no record exists to support the claim that Damagum was suspended or Mohammed appointed.

  • Legal Precedents: The lawyers referenced an October 10, 2024, Federal High Court judgment that recognizes Damagum as the acting national chairman and prohibits INEC from accepting documents without his signature. Furthermore, they noted that the Court of Appeal upheld the NWC’s suspension of Anyanwu on March 9, 2026.

  • Call for Institutional Review: The petitioners have requested that the IGP investigate how INEC processed the contested November 3 letter despite being aware of the existing court orders and the NWC’s official resolutions.

  • Stated Objective: Counsel for the petitioner emphasized that the action is intended to address the integrity of public institutions and prevent the use of misleading internal party documentation, noting their readiness to provide supporting court judgments and party records to the police.
