Trump’s Immigration Policy May Curb Nigeria’s Brain Drain – Prof. Uremadu
A Nigerian academic, Professor Sebastian Uremadu, has described former U.S. President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policy as a potential advantage for Nigeria, urging the federal government to leverage it to address the country’s persistent brain drain.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking to journalists in Umuahia, the Professor of Banking and Finance at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, noted that Nigeria has long suffered from the mass emigration of its brightest minds in fields such as healthcare, academia, and economics. He believes Trump’s policy could help reduce this outflow.
Professor Uremadu called on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to create an enabling environment for Nigerian professionals by improving infrastructure and reducing systemic challenges that force them abroad in search of better opportunities.
He also appealed to the government to end multiple taxation and address high interest rates, which he said are stifling businesses and worsening hunger. In addition, he advocated for the reinstatement of fuel subsidies to ease economic pressure on citizens.
On regional politics, Professor Uremadu encouraged leaders from Nigeria’s South East to pursue strategic alliances with other geopolitical zones to regain national political relevance.
He concluded with a caution about the declining number of Igbo youths enlisting in the Nigerian Army and Police, warning that such trends could hinder their future representation in top military positions.
