PDP Will Not Join Merger Against APC, Says Governor Bala Mohammed

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that while it remains open to collaboration with individuals and parties willing to join its movement, it will not participate in any formal coalition aimed at removing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This position was disclosed by the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, in a communiqué issued to journalists following a two-day meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Governor Mohammed emphasized that although there is growing speculation regarding the formation of a merger or alliance among opposition groups, the PDP has resolved to chart its own course rather than merge with other parties. However, he reiterated the party’s openness to welcoming like-minded individuals or groups that share its vision for reclaiming leadership in 2027.

He stated:

“In light of ongoing talks about possible mergers and alliances, the Forum has resolved that the PDP will not engage in any coalition. Nevertheless, as a leading opposition party, the PDP welcomes those willing to join the party in the quest to deliver responsible governance in 2027.”

In addition, the forum addressed internal party matters, reaffirming its earlier decision (made in Asaba) regarding the position of National Secretary. With the Supreme Court’s recent judgment, the governors proposed that the Deputy National Secretary temporarily assume the role, pending the formal nomination and ratification of a substantive candidate from the South East by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Forum also underscored its commitment to upholding constitutional democracy by seeking judicial interpretation from the Supreme Court on the legality of declaring a state of emergency in any state.

Furthermore, the governors expressed unwavering support for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, criticizing what they described as an unwarranted crisis affecting the state and its residents. They pledged to stand in solidarity with Governor Fubara throughout the ordeal.

This development comes amid calls from key opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar (PDP presidential candidate in 2023), Peter Obi (Labour Party candidate), and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who have been advocating for a coalition to challenge the APC in the upcoming 2027 elections.
