Onyeka, who has consistently featured for the Super Eagles, was left out of the 23-man list selected by Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, despite initially being named in the provisional squad.
The former FC Midtjylland midfielder has been a key player for Augsburg throughout the current season, contributing regularly in Germany’s Bundesliga.
Thorup, speaking to Oma Sports, shared his disbelief over the omission, emphasizing Onyeka’s impressive form and his expectations of seeing the midfielder not just included, but also starting in the lineup.
“Frank has had an outstanding season in one of Europe’s top leagues,” Thorup said. “I was genuinely surprised he wasn’t called up. I actually expected him to make the starting eleven.”
Despite the snub, Thorup remains optimistic that Onyeka will be recalled for future Super Eagles assignments.

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigeria jersey, representing my country and giving everything I had for this beautiful sport, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football… I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time.”
She concluded her farewell message with deep appreciation, stating that she steps away from international duty carrying 86 total appearances, zero regrets, and boundless gratitude for her teammates, fans, and the nation.
Joining the global wave of recognition, CAF honored her monumental impact on African women’s football via social media, writing:
