Vandals have targeted key pipelines operated by Oando Plc in Bayelsa State, carrying out three separate attacks over the past week. In response to the attacks, Oando Plc has activated its emergency response plan, deploying teams to repair the leaks and mitigate the damage. The company has confirmed its collaboration with relevant authorities to conduct a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) to assess the full extent of the sabotage and determine its cause. The JIV, which involves oil operators, regulators, and local communities, aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the incident.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, has expressed outrage over the attacks, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice. Accompanied by security officials, Lokpobiri visited the site of the damage, calling the sabotage “unfortunate” and emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s valuable oil assets. He declared that anyone linked to the crime would be pursued, stating that such acts would not go unchallenged.

This series of pipeline attacks is part of an ongoing issue of crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in Nigeria, which has led several international oil companies, including Shell and Eni, to shift focus to deep-water operations. The government’s strong stance on addressing these criminal acts signals a renewed effort to protect the country’s oil infrastructure.

The Strategic Push for an Opposition Coalition

Despite possessing what he considers the superior candidate, Baba-Ahmed explained why the party is actively championing a broader political alliance:

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

  • Defeating Fault Lines: Framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the nation, Baba-Ahmed noted that the stakes go far beyond individual party ambitions.
