Kano Government Reaffirms Commitment to Blasphemy Laws Despite ECOWAS Verdict
The Kano State Government has defended its controversial blasphemy laws in response to a recent ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice, which found elements of the laws to be inconsistent with international human rights standards.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an official statement issued to Punch, Kano State’s Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Garba Waiya, emphasized that the state remains committed to preserving its religious and moral framework. He stated that Kano would not yield to external pressures and insisted that its laws reflect the will and beliefs of the state’s predominantly Muslim population.
Waiya argued that the Nigerian federal system empowers states to enact laws aligned with their local religious, social, and moral values. He further stated that the blasphemy laws are vital to maintaining peace and order in the state, as well as protecting religious sanctity.
“We fully respect the authority of the ECOWAS Court, but the laws governing Kano must reflect the unique moral and religious identity of our people,” Waiya stated.
He reiterated that the people of Kano had entrusted the government with the responsibility of safeguarding their spiritual values, and that these laws remain an essential part of that mission.
The state also stressed that its legal framework is a legitimate expression of Nigeria’s legal pluralism, not an aberration. While acknowledging the ECOWAS court’s verdict, the Kano government stood firm in its position, underlining that its laws are not just lawful, but representative of the people’s moral compass.
