Nigerian Student Defrauds U.S. University of $49,000, Pleads Guilty
A 24-year-old Nigerian man, Mercy Ojedeji, has pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and unlawful use of fraudulent immigration documents in the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Ojedeji fraudulently obtained a U.S. student visa by using forged academic records, recommendation letters, a falsified resume, and a fake English proficiency report. With these, he gained admission into the University of Missouri’s PhD chemistry program in Fall 2023, securing a stipend and tuition waiver worth over $49,000.
However, he neither attended classes nor participated in any research activities and was dismissed from the program in January 2024, leading to the termination of his visa. Despite this, he used the expired visa to apply for a Missouri driver’s license in February.
Authorities began investigating after receiving reports linking Ojedeji’s partner’s address to a romance scam. Over 190 packages—many containing cash and gift cards—were sent to the address during their relationship, with 35 of them linked to Nigerian IP addresses. Seventeen packages contained $94,150, and the total estimated intended loss is over $1 million.
Although Ojedeji has pleaded guilty to immigration and wire fraud, he denies involvement in the romance scam. He will be sentenced on July 10. The charges carry a potential sentence of up to 30 years and $500,000 in fines.
