PDP Slams Edo Governor Okpebholo Over Early Campaign for Tinubu
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State for initiating early campaign activities in support of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. In a statement released on Friday, the Edo State PDP Chairman, Chris Osa Nehikhare, expressed concern over the governor’s public endorsement, which he claims was orchestrated to curry favor with Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Nehikhare condemned Okpebholo’s actions, stating that a sitting governor, who should uphold the law, is instead engaging in unconstitutional behavior. He cited Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates that public campaigning can only commence 150 days before an election and must end 24 hours before the polls.
Describing the move as illegal and dangerous, the PDP called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant authorities to take disciplinary action against the governor. The party said Okpebholo’s actions undermine the rule of law and set a worrisome precedent.
The PDP further mocked Okpebholo’s boast of delivering Edo State to Tinubu in 2027, pointing out that he could not even secure a clear victory in his own gubernatorial contest, which the party described as marred by manipulation and illegitimacy.
“This same individual, who is struggling to gain public trust and credibility, now claims he can determine the political direction of the entire state. It is an affront to the intelligence of the Edo people,” Nehikhare stated.
The statement concluded with a warning to President Tinubu not to be misled by Okpebholo’s flattery, stressing that the governor lacks the influence to deliver electoral victory in Edo. The PDP urged law enforcement and electoral bodies to take note of this breach and enforce appropriate sanctions.
“No one—regardless of their position—should be above the Constitution,” the party emphasized.
