PDP Faces Major Crisis as Governors Plot Exit to APC and New Coalitions

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is grappling with a severe political crisis, with mounting discontent among its governors and top party stakeholders, putting its future at risk just two years after its loss in the 2023 presidential election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sources within the party disclosed to Nigerian Tribune that the 12 PDP governors have distanced themselves from the national leadership, casting doubts on the forthcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for May. This internal division has raised alarm over the party’s preparedness for the 2027 elections.

Reports indicate that at least five PDP governors are considering aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or joining a new political coalition ahead of the next elections. This shift is largely attributed to the growing influence of Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and his allies within the PDP National Working Committee (NWC).

The national leadership of the PDP remains fractured, with many NWC members opposed to Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum, due to his perceived allegiance to Wike. This division has left the party weak, unable to respond effectively to major national issues.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, one of the key figures in the party, recently endorsed Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary, opposing Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s claims to the position. Despite this, Makinde’s relationship with Wike remains uncertain, particularly following their previous collaboration in the G5 group that opposed the PDP presidential ticket in 2023.

Tensions between Wike and other PDP governors, such as Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Duoye Diri of Bayelsa, have resulted in no support for the national leadership, further weakening party unity. In recent months, governors have stayed away from the national secretariat in Abuja, nearly paralyzing the party’s operations.

Externally, the PDP is struggling to attract credible candidates for the upcoming Anambra State gubernatorial election. Despite extending the deadline for nominations, no strong contenders have emerged, further highlighting the party’s declining influence.

Financially, the PDP is facing a crisis, with the governors now withholding funds that traditionally sustained the party. A senior party official lamented, “The governors have not given us the money to run the party. There’s no reason this party can’t survive, but it’s for the governors to show more interest.”

The party’s inability to address internal conflicts has compounded its challenges. A senior NWC member revealed that despite Wike’s controversial actions, the party has been unable to take any disciplinary measures.

Political moves, such as the revocation of the party’s Certificate of Occupancy for its national secretariat by the FCT administration, are seen as politically motivated and part of Wike’s feud with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, stemming from the 2023 presidential primary.

A senior NWC member described the situation as “personal,” claiming that Wike is seeking revenge by undermining Atiku and Tambuwal to prevent Atiku from securing the 2027 ticket.

In response to claims of financial withholding, Dr. Emmanuel Agbo, Director-General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, dismissed the allegations as falsehoods. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, also declined to comment.

Factional Crisis Rocks ADC In Akwa Ibom As Party Splits Deepen.

Barely a year after its inauguration in Akwa Ibom State, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has been plunged into a deep factional crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
