North East Senators Condemn Exclusion from $530M Agro-Industrial Initiative

Published

Senators representing Nigeria’s North East region have strongly criticized the Federal Government for excluding the region from the first phase of its $530 million Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) initiative.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The SAPZ initiative, launched to modernize agriculture through private-sector engagement and public-private collaboration, is jointly funded by the Federal Government, African Development Bank (AfDB), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

Despite the region’s vast agricultural resources and substantial contributions to Nigeria’s economy, none of the six states—Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe—were selected for the program’s initial rollout.

The North East Senate Caucus, led by Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje, described the omission as “unjust and troubling,” arguing that it contradicts the government’s stated commitment to inclusive development. The lawmakers stressed that the region’s strategic role in livestock and crop production makes its exclusion detrimental to national food security and regional growth.

They are now demanding the immediate inclusion of the North East in the SAPZ program, emphasizing the need for fair resource allocation and balanced regional development.

The senators warned that excluding the region could stifle its economic prospects and weaken Nigeria’s broader agricultural competitiveness. They also highlighted opportunities for international collaboration, particularly with China, which has shown interest in supporting Nigeria’s agricultural, mining, and renewable energy sectors.

Previously, the Federal Government attributed delays in ambassadorial and developmental appointments to financial constraints, and the lawmakers are urging a renewed commitment to equity and sustainable progress in the deployment of national resources.

  • Consensus Over Ego: The PRP chairman emphasized that the party’s push for a mega-coalition is driven by consensus and constitutional processes rather than forcing Duke’s candidacy through on profile strength alone.

The coalition aims to unite likeminded opposition forces to rescue Nigeria from its current trajectory and bridge its deep fault lines.
