Nkem Owoh Recounts Heartbreak Over Brother’s Execution Under Buhari’s Military Regime

Veteran Nollywood actor, Nkem Owoh, has emotionally recalled the execution of his elder brother, Bartholomew Owoh, during the military rule of General Muhammadu Buhari, describing it as one of the darkest and most painful chapters of his life.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NIvo News, Bartholomew was among three young Nigerians executed by firing squad on April 10, 1985, for drug-related offences. Others included Lawal Ojuolape and Bernard Ogedengbe. At the time the offences were committed, they were not punishable by death — a sentence which was later imposed following the retroactive implementation of a military decree under Buhari’s regime.

Speaking during a recent interview on Arise TV’s The Interview, Owoh revealed how devastated he was upon hearing the news, recalling that he broke down in tears while working at Anambra Television.

“I was so furious, I couldn’t hold back the tears as I walked down the corridors,” he said. “The most painful part was the decision to backdate the decree, which allowed them to execute individuals who committed the offences before the new law even existed.”

He criticized the morality and legality of the action, stressing that the government’s move to retroactively enforce capital punishment violated both justice and the rights of those affected.

“Why apply a law to people who committed no crime under that statute when it didn’t even exist at the time?” the actor questioned bitterly.

Owoh’s emotional recollection sheds light on a controversial period in Nigeria’s history and continues to spark conversations about justice, rule of law, and military accountability.
