PANDEF Criticizes Rivers Sole Administrator Ibas for Defying Court Order, Accuses Him of Undemocratic Actions
The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has strongly criticized the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (retd), for disregarding a court ruling and proceeding with the appointment of 23 local government administrators. This action has raised concerns, with PANDEF accusing Ibas of contempt of court.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, presided over by Justice Adam Muhammed, had issued an injunction on Tuesday, preventing Ibas from appointing the local government administrators. However, despite the court order, Ibas moved forward with the appointments, which also included the reconstitution of boards for various agencies, commissions, and parastatals previously suspended by his administration.
In a statement, PANDEF President Godknows Igali condemned Ibas for undermining democratic principles in Rivers State, expressing concern over the systematic erosion of democratic structures. He pointed out that the removal of photographs of the elected governor from government offices, despite his not being officially removed from office, was a clear example of undemocratic behavior. Igali witnessed this firsthand at the Port Harcourt International Airport and was informed it had occurred in other government offices as well.
Igali also criticized Ibas’ decision to suspend boards of essential statutory institutions, including the State Independent Electoral Commission and the Governing Councils of Tertiary Institutions. According to Igali, Ibas’ actions are contrary to the responsibilities of a sole administrator, which should focus on interim administration and maintaining peace in the state, not dismantling vital democratic structures.
Igali’s remarks reflect broader concerns about the erosion of democratic norms in Rivers State, with PANDEF calling for adherence to due process and respect for the rule of law.
