Governor Alia’s Administration Moves to Eradicate Extortion in Gboko
The Taskforce on Illegal Levies and Other Unlawful Activities in Gboko Local Government Area, under the leadership of Hon. Moses Vangeryina, carried out a surveillance and enforcement operation on Wednesday aimed at curbing extortion and unauthorized practices.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During an early morning patrol, the taskforce uncovered fresh incidents of extortion at a construction site in the Akahan Adi area, close to the late Ter Gboko’s residence. The site had reportedly been hijacked by individuals affiliated with the ‘Yion Youth Association,’ who were allegedly demanding illegal payments from builders.
Four suspects—Tersur Adekaa, Terkula Adzer, Terlumun Iorver, and Achin Terhemen—were arrested at the scene while allegedly trying to extort N300,000 from a worker. They also threatened to demolish the ongoing construction if their demands were not met.
In a swift response, Hon. Vangeryina dismissed the local community leader for negligence and failing to prevent such illicit activities. He urged residents to remain alert and promptly report any incidents of extortion or illegal levies to the taskforce.
Hon. Vangeryina reaffirmed the state government’s commitment, under Governor Hyacinth Alia, to safeguarding citizens’ rights and eradicating illegal activities across the region.
“Governor Alia’s administration is determined to defend the interests of Benue people. We will thoroughly cleanse Gboko of unlawful acts and protect our people from exploitation,” he emphasized.
