Peter Obi, Alex Otti Storm INEC, Demand Recognition of Senator Esther Usman as LP Chair
On Wednesday, prominent Labour Party (LP) figures—including former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti—visited the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja. Their objective was to advocate for the official recognition of Senator Esther Nenadi Usman as the rightful National Chairman of the party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The delegation was received by INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, where they presented their position in line with a recent Supreme Court judgment that favored Usman’s claim to the LP leadership.
This development follows the Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling last Friday, which overturned a prior decision by the Court of Appeal. The apex court concluded that the appeal court lacked the jurisdiction to affirm Julius Abure as LP National Chairman, citing that the matter falls under internal party affairs.
Senator Usman, alongside another party member, had filed an appeal deemed valid by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, a counter-appeal from Abure’s faction was dismissed as lacking merit.
The legal triumph significantly strengthens Usman’s standing within the party. Consequently, the LP delegation led by Obi and Otti is now urging INEC to implement the court’s directive and formally recognize Usman’s leadership.
