NDLEA Under Fire: Family of Slain Toddler Still Await Justice 21 Months After Tragic Raid
Nearly two years have passed since a tragic incident in which operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) allegedly opened fire during a raid in Okpanam, Delta State, fatally shooting a two-year-old child, Ivan Omorhiakogbe, and severely injuring his one-year-old brother, Eromonsele, in the eye. To date, the family remains without justice or adequate compensation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The shooting occurred on July 13, 2023, while the children were at their mother’s shop. Although the NDLEA initially pledged support, including a promise to fly the surviving child to the United States for specialized treatment, nothing has materialized more than 21 months later.
Senator Neda Imasuen of the Labour Party, representing Edo South, has condemned the N20 million compensation offer reportedly made by the NDLEA as grossly insufficient. Speaking to the press in Edo State, he revealed that the Senate, particularly the Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, is advocating for no less than N100 million in compensation. He emphasized that if necessary, the amount would be deducted directly from the NDLEA’s budget.
“The NDLEA admitted fault, acknowledging that it was their weapon that discharged the fatal bullets,” Imasuen stated. “Offering N20 million for a lost life and a child facing possible blindness is unacceptable. These were babies. Who knows what their futures might have held?”
In contrast, the family, through their legal counsel, Barrister Mathew Edaghede, is demanding N2 billion in compensation. Edaghede presented this petition to the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions, emphasizing the lifelong consequences of the incident.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State had previously announced in November 2023 that arrangements were in place to facilitate the injured child’s medical treatment in the U.S., following a condolence visit from NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd). Despite public assurances, the proposed treatment has not occurred as of the time of this report.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA maintains that the raid was based on credible intelligence targeting illicit drug traffickers, yet the outcome has drawn criticism over operational procedures and accountability.
This case continues to attract national attention, as the Senate intensifies pressure on the NDLEA to provide a just resolution for a grieving family still waiting for closure.
