Labour Party Vows to Defend HQ, Accuses NLC of Blackmail
The Labour Party (LP) has strongly reacted to accusations from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), led by Comrade Joe Ajaero, asserting that the NLC is attempting to blackmail the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies. In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Ifoh condemned the NLC leadership’s actions and threats, saying that the party had no choice but to respond, as it felt compelled to assure its members that the LP would stand firm in defending its offices and resisting any form of intimidation.
The LP accused the NLC of trying to pressure INEC and security agencies into improper actions. Ifoh referenced a Supreme Court ruling that clarified that the court has no jurisdiction over internal party matters, including leadership disputes, affirming that the LP’s leadership transition in March 2024 followed due process as per the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
Furthermore, Ifoh clarified that the LP’s legal actions were focused on compelling INEC to provide an uploading code for the Ondo State governorship election, not related to internal leadership disputes. He also dismissed the NLC’s meetings as unauthorized, particularly one held in Umuahia, and deemed their decisions invalid.
Ifoh expressed concern over the NLC’s history of aggressive actions, such as the 2024 incident where union members forcefully entered LP’s national headquarters. He criticized Ajaero for politicizing the NLC, instead of focusing on workers’ welfare, suggesting that Ajaero should consider joining politics.
The Labour Party warned that any attempt to attack its offices would result in legal action and mobilization of members for self-defense. The LP concluded by emphasizing that if the NLC disregards security agencies and continues with its threats, they would seek protection from security forces and resist any illegal actions.
