Boko Haram Threat Resurfaces: Zulum Warns Borno May Return to Chaos
Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed deep concern over recent Boko Haram attacks on military positions, warning that the state risks falling back into violent unrest.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He made the remarks during an expanded Security Council meeting on Tuesday, held at the Government House in Maiduguri.
Zulum disclosed that insurgents had overrun several military bases, including those in Wulgo, Sabongari, and Wajirko, noting, “It seems we are losing ground.” He stressed the urgent need for the deployment of fighter helicopters and surveillance drones to support the military’s efforts.
While commending the armed forces and security agencies for maintaining relative peace in recent years, the governor insisted that frank discussions were necessary to prevent past gains from being lost.
As chairman of the North-East Governors’ Forum, Zulum criticized the apparent lack of focus from the Nigerian Army and the Federal Ministry of Defence on the region, urging greater federal attention to the North-East due to its strategic importance in the Sahel.
He highlighted that Borno borders Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, making it a key point of entry for foreign insurgents. Without swift intervention, he warned, “Borno may return into turmoil again,” and called on President Bola Tinubu to act decisively.
Zulum also urged the military to go on the offensive, rather than merely mounting checkpoints or guarding towns, warning that Boko Haram must not be allowed to regroup or rearm.
The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, also voiced serious concerns, revealing that Abadam, Marte, and Guzamala LGAs remain under insurgent control, calling them “no-go areas.”
The traditional ruler blamed part of the insecurity on new settlers masquerading as students of Islamic education, who he said were aiding the militants. He added that many Borno residents had fled to neighboring countries for safety.
He further lamented that many local government areas established since 1976 still lack essential infrastructure like roads and electricity. He appealed for the rehabilitation of major federal roads, including Biu–Damboa–Maiduguri, Maiduguri–Dikwa–Ngala, and others now in poor condition.
Security chiefs and traditional leaders from across Borno were in attendance, including the GOC 7 Division, Major General Abubakar Haruna, and emirs from Biu, Uba, Askira, and Gwoza.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
