Anambra Gubernatorial Election: DSS, Police Arrest Individuals Illegally Buying Voter NINs – NIMC
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has confirmed the arrest of individuals involved in the illicit purchase of National Identification Numbers (NINs) from voters in Anambra State. According to news report, political agents reportedly infiltrated local communities across the state, offering money in exchange for residents’ NINs — a move seen as an attempt to manipulate the electoral process.
In an official statement released on Wednesday, NIMC spokesperson Kayode Adegoke disclosed that the agency was alerted to the activities of these unauthorized actors who were soliciting NINs from residents for financial gain — a direct violation of several national laws including the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007, the Data Protection Act, and the Cybercrime Act.
Upon receiving this intelligence, NIMC collaborated with the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to swiftly apprehend the suspects. The individuals are currently undergoing interrogation and will be prosecuted accordingly.
Adegoke issued a strong warning to Anambra residents, urging them not to trade their personal data for cash, as such actions are not only illegal but punishable by law. He reiterated that NINs are intended solely for use by their rightful holders to access authorized government or private services and must be properly verified.
He emphasized:
“NIN holders should never give out their identification numbers in exchange for money. Doing so is illegal and against national regulations. The Commission has previously cautioned citizens against sharing their NIN or personal information with unauthorized individuals or unverified platforms.”
NIMC urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities as the state prepares for its crucial gubernatorial election.
