Troops Nab 43 Oil Thieves, Recover Over 254,000 Litres of Stolen Fuel in Niger Delta
In a coordinated military effort to tackle oil theft, troops of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have apprehended 43 suspects and seized over 254,000 litres of stolen petroleum products during operations spanning Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom states. According to a statement released by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, the raids targeted known oil theft hotspots in the Niger Delta region.
In Rivers State, troops dismantled a significant illegal refining site in Ataba, Andoni LGA, recovering over 80,000 litres of crude oil. In Eleme LGA, 80 sacks containing approximately 3,200 litres of suspected stolen petroleum were intercepted near Ogale Junction. Further raids in Okarki (Ahoada West LGA) uncovered an illegal oven storing over 3,000 litres of crude oil.
Additional operations in Omoku, Aloloba (Kula II), Oshie, and Krakrama led to the seizure of vehicles and storage equipment used in oil bunkering. Troops reported continued success along the Imo River corridor, where clearance operations are ongoing.
In Delta State, soldiers uncovered a vast bunkering site in Old Ogorode, Sapele LGA. A Ford bus with registration KLK 797 HR, loaded with 90,000 litres of stolen crude, was impounded, along with tanks and drums containing over 34,000 litres of petroleum products. Three suspects were arrested in connection with these discoveries.
Bayelsa State operations resulted in the destruction of refining infrastructure in Okordia, Yenagoa LGA, and Biseni along Taylor Creek, where a total of over 13,000 litres of crude oil was recovered. Troops also dismantled a third site in Clough Creek, Ekeremor LGA.
Meanwhile, in Akwa Ibom, soldiers destroyed various camps and equipment used for refining stolen oil, further disrupting the operations of criminal networks.
The Army emphasized that all suspects have been handed over to relevant authorities, and seized materials are being processed according to legal procedures.
Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, commended the troops for their success and underscored the Army’s commitment to eliminating oil theft. He stated that these efforts are crucial not only for national security but also for boosting oil and gas production critical to Nigeria’s economy.
The military assured the public that these operations will persist until the region is completely rid of economic saboteurs.
