Speaking to the press at the Nigeria Labour Congress Secretariat in Port Harcourt, Solomon Lenu, former spokesperson for Civil Society Organizations in Rivers State, reaffirmed the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful protest. He voiced concerns over the safety of participants and condemned the use of force against unarmed demonstrators.
Lenu emphasized that intimidation would not deter their efforts to demand truth, justice, and equity.
Chetam Thierry-Nwala, Executive Director of Trust Africa Initiative, criticized the police for what he described as a violation of democratic principles. He stated that the protest organizers had properly notified and secured approval from the police ahead of the demonstration.
According to Thierry-Nwala, security operatives allegedly shot a protester in the leg and detained a journalist covering the event. He condemned the excessive use of force and insisted that all Nigerians are equally entitled to their fundamental rights.
The protest, involving members of the Take-It-Back Movement, various Civil Society Organizations, and the Niger Delta Congress, began at Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt. Despite being asked by security personnel to relocate, protesters persisted, singing solidarity songs and marching toward Aba Express Road.
This act of defiance led to a police response involving tear gas and gunfire into the air, forcing demonstrators to scatter for safety.
Despite the disruption, organizers remain resolute in their cause, promising to reconvene in their ongoing fight for justice and equity in Nigeria.
