LP Reps Reject Abure’s Attempt to Remove Caucus Leader, Reaffirm Support for Ogene
The Labour Party (LP) Caucus in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has strongly criticized former national chairman Julius Abure for announcing the removal of Hon. Afam Victor Ogene as caucus leader, calling the move “naive, laughable, and misleading.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released on Tuesday, the caucus emphasized that the position of caucus leader is not an appointed role but one filled through an internal election among its members. They clarified that Hon. Ogene was duly elected on May 6, 2023, by 21 out of 31 participating members of the 10th Assembly’s LP caucus. The election process, they noted, was transparent and overseen by three abstaining members: Honourables Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, Obi Aguocha, and Professor Lilian Oby Orogbu.
Responding to Abure’s declaration, the caucus insisted that only those who elected Ogene have the authority to remove him. They criticized Abure as a “power-hungry figure” entangled in unresolved allegations of misconduct, stating that his actions appear driven by bitterness over a recent Supreme Court judgment confirming the end of his tenure.
They further accused Abure of leading the party like a “Ponzi scheme,” with a leadership style allegedly marked by forgery and financial mismanagement. The statement highlighted controversies linked to Abure across multiple states — from Anambra and Ebonyi to Edo and Plateau — suggesting a widespread pattern of impropriety and misuse of party funds.
The lawmakers also questioned Abure’s interest in funds belonging to the House of Representatives caucus, especially given that he has not accounted for monies raised during the 2023 general elections. They stated that no credible organ of the party would entrust him with funds until he clears himself of the serious allegations made by the party’s former treasurer, Oluchi Oparah.
Reaffirming their support for the party’s National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, the caucus announced its alignment with upcoming NEC/stakeholders’ meetings convened by LP national leader Peter Obi and Abia Governor Alex Otti.
In closing, the caucus reiterated its commitment to a transparent, accountable leadership structure and emphasized that the party must move beyond the crisis with leadership that upholds its values and integrity.
