The arraignment took place before Justice O.A. Egwuatu at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday. The charges allege that between January 5, 2024, and December 10, 2024, Abubakar and his company, along with Ibrahim Kashim (the former Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, currently at large), illegally transferred ₦2.8 billion from the Bauchi State Expenditure Account at United Bank for Africa into Jasfad Resources Enterprise’s account.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. Other individuals implicated in the fraud, including Ibrahim Kashim, Aminu Hammayo, Saleh Mohammed, and Balarabe Abdullahi, are still at large.

The prosecution, led by Abba Mohammed, requested a trial date and urged the remand of the defendants in a correctional facility. In response, the defense counsels applied for bail. Jaja’s defense argued that he was on administrative bail and should be released on self-recognition or to the Bauchi State Attorney-General’s custody.

After hearing both sides, Justice Egwuatu granted bail to each defendant in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a federal government employee not below grade level 17, and they must provide tax payment evidence for the past three years. The defendants must also submit their passports to the court registrar.

Pending bail fulfillment, Jaja was released into the custody of the Bauchi State Attorney-General, while Abubakar was remanded in the Kuje Correctional Centre. The trial is set to begin on June 17.
